South High School’s Student of the Week is freshman Tamia Cheeks.  Tamia is the daughter of Ralita and Brandon Cheeks.  At South High, she is a member of the Cougar volleyball, basketball, and track teams.  She is also the student council freshman class president.  Her favorite class is conditioning, she enjoys learning about history, and her favorite teachers are Ms. Cradduck and Mrs. Gates.  Tamia says her name means chipmunk in Latin.  After graduation, she would like to study to be an I.T. support specialist.  Congratulations, Tamia!

South High School’s Student of the Week is junior Araceli Rivas.  Araceli is the daughter of Dana and Alberto Rivas.  At South High, she is a member of the Cougar Band, and a pitcher for the Cougar Softball Team.  She enjoys volunteering around Christmastime because of the smiles it brings to kids in difficult situations.  She most enjoys her American Studies class at South High because the mix of students and the teacher just makes her day better. After graduation, she would like to continue her academics and play softball.  Congratulations, Araceli!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Addelyn Weishaar. Addie is the daughter of Ken and Melissa Weishaar. At South High, she has been a member of the Cougar Basketball and Tennis teams, along with Student Council as 9th-11th grade class treasurer and 12th grade student body treasurer.  She loves her chemistry class with the best teacher ever, Mrs. Chamberlain, because of all of the fun experiments.  Outside of school, she volunteers with the Love, Chloe Foundation, and enjoys baking, shopping, and traveling.  After graduation, Addie will be attending Kansas State University to study pre-pharmacy, with the intent to enroll in a pharmacy school.  Congratulations, Addie!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Lainey Brown.  Lainey is the daughter of Aaron and Miranda Brown.  At South High, Lainey is co-captain of the Cougar Girls’ Soccer Team.  She enjoys playing soccer because her teammates are like family and they have lots of fun.  After graduation, she plans to study and play soccer at Bethany College, before studying to become an optometrist.  Congratulations, Lainey!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Hadley Lawson.  Hadley is the daughter of Jennifer Gross.  At South High, she is a member of HOSA, student council representative, and is a National Honor Society officer.  She has helped with blood drives, fundraisers, and Relay for Life.  She has especially enjoyed her medical internship class and the opportunity to shadow at the hospital.  After graduation, Hadley plans to attend the University of Kansas to study Pre-Med.  Congratulations, Hadley!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Rohan Patel.  Rohan is the son of Prakash and Shilpa Patel.  At South High, he is a member of National Honor Society, Mathletes, and Kilt Krew.  He has also volunteers with Relay for Life.  He enjoys watching Cougar athletics, and his favorite teachers have been Mrs. Chamberlain, Mrs. Cairns, Mr. Harris, and Mr. Turner.  Outside of school, he enjoys watching basketball, especially his favorite team, the Chicago Bulls.  After graduation, Rohan will attend the University of Kansas.  Congratulations, Rohan!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Lainey Howard.  Lainey is the daughter of Joni and Scott Howard.  At South High, she is a National Honor Society member, HOSA treasurer, and is on the Cougar softball team.  Her favorite part of school is being a member of the softball team, as it gives her something to look forward to after a long school day and brings her closer to a fun group of girls.  Outside of school, she is a barista and certified trainer at Starbucks, volunteers with Relay for Life, and works with young softball players in town.  She also enjoys hanging out with her friends and family, and playing her with dog Millie.  After graduation, Lainey plans to attend Neosho Community College to play softball, followed by transferring to a four-year university to achieve a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Congratulations, Lainey!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kailyn Olson.  Kailyn is the daughter of Nicole and Shawn Olson.  At South High, she has been involved with Cougar volleyball, softball, and Relay for Life.  She sees her senior year role on the softball team as a leader whose job it is to teach underclassmen how to make a successful program.  She enjoys coming to school every day to see and interact with so many different people.  Outside of school, she has worked with organizations feeding families in need and helping during the Christmas season.  She also has a shihpoo puppy name Oliver who is her bestie, and credits her family as her biggest supporters.  After graduation, Kailyn plans to study pre-nursing at Kansas State University.  Congratulations, Kailyn!

South High School’s Student of the Week is sophomore Hannah Hutton.  Hannah is the daughter of Brandy and Shannon Hutton.  At South High, she is a varsity cheerleader, link leader, and math tutor.  She enjoys coming to school every day to hang out with her friends and to learn new things.  After graduation, she would like to work as a firefighter, and is interested in attending Fort Hays State University.  Congratulations, Hannah!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Lilyian Hanks.  Lilyian is the daughter of Ashlin Hanks.  At South High, she has been a cheerleader for four years and is a member of HOSA and National Honor Society.  She has also volunteered for Relay for Life and the Love, Chloe Foundation.  She has especially enjoyed her medical internship class, as it has given her a glimpse into her job interests and other future possibilities.  Outside of school, Lilyian works at Old Navy and Trinity Lutheran Church, and generally just enjoys spending time with friends and family.  After graduation, she plans to attend Kansas State University to major in Nutrition and Health, with the goal of pursuing a career as either a dental hygienist or registered nurse.  Congratulations, Lilyian!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kylee Carter.  Kylee is the daughter of Larry and Cindy Carter.  At South High, she participated in volleyball, softball, was a member of Kilt Crew, and National Honor Society.  She loved her medical internship class where she was able to shadow general practitioners and receive a glimpse into what she wants to do.  She is thankful she will graduate with 24 college credit hours and everything her high school experience has taught her.  Outside of school, Kylee has worked as a CNA for Interim Healthcare, and volunteered for Ashby House, Salina Food Bank, the American Cancer Society, and the Salina Area United Way.  After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Arizona to study pre-med with the goal of fulfilling her dreams of becoming a medical doctor. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Evan Patchett.  Evan is the son of Kristin and Brandon Dohn.  At South High, he is a member of the Robotics Club and National Honor Society.  He enjoys going to school in the pursuit of knowledge and love learning to gain an understanding of new subjects.  Outside of school, Evan volunteers at the Salina Public Library, the Food Bank, and Food Drives.  In his free time, he enjoys reading and the art of tradeskills, such as carpentry, blacksmithing, and masonry.  After graduation, he plans to study for a degree in engineering and possibly economics, in route to becoming a logistician.  Congratulations, Evan!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Yesenia Torres.  Yesenia is the daughter of Elena Escalante and Adrian Torres.  At South High, she is a thespian, has been a drama club officer for two years, has been a stage crew chief, and has participated in every show both on and off stage. She loves being involved in theatre and drama club, but her favorite subject is math.  Yesenia has assisted with Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, the South High Angel Tree, and other drama club community service.  She also has two puppies that she loves more than anything else.  After graduation, she plans to attend Wichita State University to study Theatre.  Congratulations, Yesenia!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Avery McComber.  Avery is the daughter of Kris Rowland and T.R. McComber.  At South High, she is BPA vice-president, HOSA president, member of FCA, Mathletes, Book Club, Drama Club, Link Crew, and on the Cougars Bowling and Golf teams.  Her favorite subject is science and she enjoys the challenge of the innovative lessons of chemistry and physics.  Outside of school, Avery is on the First Covenant Church student leadership committee, participates in community theater and bowling league, and likes to go on car rides to Starbucks and walk her two dogs.  After graduation, she plans to attend KU.  Congratulations, Avery!

South High School’s Student of the Week is junior Janie Fletcher.  Janie is the daughter of Jim and Christine Fletcher.  She enjoys attending South High to be able to be with her friends and make memories.  She also enjoys being a manager for the Cougar Football Team.  Outside of school, Janie works at Dillons and Martinelli’s.  She is the youngest of four siblings and her family has one dog.  After graduation, she plans to attend college to become an esthetician.  Congratulations, Janie!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Emma Shulda.  Emma is the daughter of Kristi and Damon Shulda.  At South High, she is the clarinet section leader for the Cougar Band, was a tennis state qualifier, is a performer and thespian in the theatre, and is National Honor Society parliamentarian.  She has loved her history classes at South High, and enjoys her time in band and theatre.  She also has a 14 year old dog named Max, like the horse from Tangled.  After graduation, Emma plans to study Environmental Engineering at Kansas State University.  Congratulations, Emma!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Makenzie Hemberger.  Makenzie is the daughter of Jason and Lisa Hemberger.  At South High, she is a member of the Orchestra and Drama Club.  She enjoys getting to talk to different people every day, and building sets for the drama club performances.  Outside of school, Makenzie attends Youth Group at Emmanuel Four Square Church, and her favorite things to do are listening to music, shopping, and going to the movies.  After graduation, she plans to take a year off to work and explore what she would like to go to school to study.  Congratulations, Makenzie!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Marcus Anariba.  Marcus is the son of Antonio Anariba.  At South High, he participates in Robotics and Debate.  He also enjoys the labs in the culinary classroom because they allow him to cook with resources he does not normally have access to.  Outside of school, Marcus is involved with CYO, and enjoys playing video games and hiking.  After graduation, he plans to attend Wichita State University.  Congratulations, Marcus!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kalysa Hamel.  Kalysa is the daughter of Aaron and Mindy Hamel.  At South High, she is a member of National Honor Society, a Link Leader, a math tutor, and on the Cougar Girls Basketball Team. She was also honored to be a Homecoming Queen candidate this fall.  She enjoys doing labs in AP Chemistry, is thankful for Mr. Ballenger’s excellent teaching to help her through senior year math.  Outside of school, Kalysa is involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and enjoys taking trips.  She has committed to play basketball at Bethany College after graduation, where she plans to major in biochemistry, followed by enrolling in the UMKC School of Dentistry.  Congratulations, Kalysa!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Guadalupe Gonzalez.  Lupita is the daughter of Filemon Gonzalez and Luz Escobedo.  At South High, she is part of the girl’s swim team, a section leader in band, works at Pawmart, and works with ESL students.  Outside of school, she helps tutor elementary students.  She loves spending time with her family, friends, and boyfriend.  After graduation, Lupita plans to attend Salina Area Technical College to earn an associate’s degree in business, before transferring to Kansas State University to study for a bachelor’s in business.  Congratulations, Lupita!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Sydney Peterson.  Sydney is the daughter of Kristine and Darren Peterson, and sister to Campbell and Griffin Peterson.  Sydney has been a member of the Cougar Girl’s Basketball Team for four years, where she loves both the practices and games. Her favorite parts of school are P.E. and getting to see her friends. Outside of school, she has volunteered with DVACK and at Bill Burke Park.  After graduation, Sydney plans to study psychology and hopes to continue her basketball career.  Congratulations, Sydney!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Shelby Stolzenburg.  Shelby is the daughter of Jay and Susan Stolzenburg.  At South High, Shelby is co-vice president of Drama Club, plays clarinet, and was a Cougar Marching Band Drum Major.  She enjoys being at school because of all the awesome friends she has made, and loves being involved with the performing arts wing, which has become like a second family.  Outside of school, she is in her 11th year of 4-H, is vice president of her club, and county level secretary.  She also loves her dog Benji.  After graduation, Shelby plans to attend Kansas State University to major in Music Education.  Congratulations, Shelby!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Brooklynn Needham.  Brooklynn is the daughter of Barbara Sellers and Matt Needham.  At South High, Brooklynn has been a member of the Cougar Volleyball Team and the Cougar Girl’s Soccer Team.  Her favorite thing about South High is Mr. Harris’ class.  He is super funny, talks about current news, and she looks forward to his class.  Outside of school, she is involved with the New Community Church youth group and pastor search, she works at Carlos O’Kelly’s as a server, and loves watching baking shows.  Brooklynn is currently undecided on her plans after graduation.  Congratulations, Brooklynn!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Jana Bray.  Jana is the daughter of Jason and Cindy Bray. At South High, she is a culinary intern, FCCLA officer, and a member of National Honor Society.  She loves all of her teachers and all that they do for her, especially Ms. Edson and Mrs. Chamberlain and their encouragement to explore the world of food science and pushing her to explore unique post-secondary studies.  Outside of school, Jana participates in the youth group at First Southern Baptist Church and loves to bake cupcakes and to share them with others!  After graduation, Jana plans to attend Kansas State University to study Bakery Science and Business Management.  Congratulations, Jana!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Aidan Heusman.  Aidan is the son of Tess Leach and Matt Heusman.  At South High, he is a member of New Dawn and is a Drama Club officer.  He enjoys science and theatre and the community of South High led by Mr. Massey, Mr. Creer, and Ms. Lindsay.  He and some peers also meet twice-weekly for creativity and conflict resolution exercises.  Outside of school, if he is not hanging with friends or doing theatre, he is sleeping or working, and encourages everyone to eat at Olive Garden and tip well!  After graduation, Aidan plans to attend Hutchinson Community College for two years, before transferring to Wichita State.  Congratulations, Aidan!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Hayden Chamberlain.  Hayden is the son of Pam and Cris Chamberlain.  He is a four-year member of the Cougar Boys’ Soccer Team.  He enjoys attending South High and hanging out with his friends, his AP History classes, and going to soccer practice.  Outside of school, he has been involved with the Friends of the Smoky Hill River.  After graduation, Hayden plans to attend the K-State Aerospace and Technology Campus in Salina to study UAS flight operations.  Congratulations, Hayden!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Laura Brucker.  Laura is the daughter of Jennifer Brucker.  At South High, she is a member of the Cougar Girl’s Tennis Team, an Orchestra section leader, President of National Honor Society, a Link Leader, a member of FCCLA, and a member of HOSA.  She enjoys the wide diversity of people, ideas, and activities at South High, which allows students to become unique individuals.  Outside of school, Laura is a section leader for the Bethany Orchestra, fosters kittens for the Salina Animal Shelter, has volunteered with blood drives, the Love, Chloe Foundation, and the Salina Art Center. After graduation, Laura plans to attend Heartland Community College for general education classes before transferring to Illinois State University.  Congratulations, Laura!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Izaac Leonard.  Izaac is the son of Kelly and Rustin Leonard.  He is a captain on the Cougar Cross Country team and a member of First Covenant Church.  He enjoys the variety of staff and facilities at South High that help him perform to the best of his ability.  He most values his family and his independence.  Izaac is currently undecided on his plans after graduation, but is narrowing down his interests and would like to attend college on scholarship.  Congratulations, Izaac!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Iliana Armbrust.  Iliana is the daughter of Ginger and Andrew Armbrust.  She is a member of the Cougar Girl’s Tennis Team, an Orchestra section leader, National Honor Society member, and competes with Math Relays.  She is also active at The Pines Tennis Club. She loves the AP teachers and classes at South High because they are well taught and intellectually challenging.  Iliana appreciates the amazing tennis program at South High that has led to her success the past four years, including a third place finish at state doubles in 2020.  After graduation, she plans to attend Kansas State University to study chemical engineering.  Congratulations, Iliana!

South High School’s Student of the Week is junior Baylee Brin. Baylee is the daughter of Kristina Brin and Mark Brin. She is a member of the Cougar volleyball and softball teams, a wrestling manager, and a member of the writing center.  Her favorite subject is math, and her favorite teachers at South High are Mr. Harris and Mr. Lynn. Outside of school, Baylee plays club volleyball, club softball, and is a server at Carlos O’Kelly’s. She enjoys spending time with her friends and listening to music, especially her favorite band, The Beach Boys.  After graduation, Baylee intends to study to become an accountant.  Congratulations, Baylee!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kayson Dietz.  Kayson is the son of Emilee Dietz and Shawn Moreland.  He is a member of the Cougar Football, Wrestling, and Track teams.  Kayson enjoys coming to school every day to interact with all of his friends.  Outside of school, he participates in youth group at New Community Church every Wednesday.  Kayson is currently undecided on his plans after graduation.  Congratulations, Kayson!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Zoe Norton.  Zoe is the daughter of Amy and John Norton and sister to Parker Norton.  She is a leader on the Cougar Golf Team and a member of National Honor Society.  She loves competing on the golf course with her teammates, and has enjoyed her AP Chemistry and AP Physics classes due to her love of science.  Outside of school, Zoe helps coach with the First Tee program to help kids become leaders through the game of golf.  After graduation, she plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Zachary Davidson.  Zach is the son of Todd and Mindi Davidson and brother to Alex and Zoe Davidson.  He is a member of the South High Cougar football, basketball, and baseball teams, and is on student council, math relays, and National Honor Society.  Zach has enjoyed having Mrs. Chamberlain, Mr. Ebert, and Mr. Harris as teachers as their classes made him look forward to coming to school every day.  Outside of school, he has volunteered at blood drives, Relay for Life, Ashby House, the Food Bank, youth sport camps, and church groups and services.  He also enjoys lifting and chocolate milk.  After graduation, Zach plans to attend an as of yet undecided college to work toward a degree in either the medical field or business.  Congratulations, Zach!

South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Lauren Stein.  Lauren is the daughter of Joe and Nancy Stein and sister to Cole and Leah Stein.  She is the South High Peppers team captain, Student Council chairperson of community involvement, and a member of National Honor Society.  Lauren dances at Renee’s Dance Academy and volunteers with Relay for Life.  She like being able to see all of her friends every day at school and most enjoys Mr. Harris’ history class.  After graduation, Lauren plans to attend college, but is currently undecided on where.  Congratulations, Lauren!
