South High School’s Student of the Week is freshman Tamia Cheeks. Tamia is the daughter of Ralita and Brandon Cheeks. At South High, she is a member of the Cougar volleyball, basketball, and track teams. She is also the student council freshman class president. Her favorite class is conditioning, she enjoys learning about history, and her favorite teachers are Ms. Cradduck and Mrs. Gates. Tamia says her name means chipmunk in Latin. South High School’s Student of the Week is junior Araceli Rivas. Araceli is the daughter of Dana and Alberto Rivas. At South High, she is a member of the Cougar Band, and a pitcher for the Cougar Softball Team. She enjoys volunteering around Christmastime because of the smiles it brings to kids in difficult situations. She most enjoys her American Studies class at South High because the mix of students and the teacher just makes her day better. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Addelyn Weishaar. Addie is the daughter of Ken and Melissa Weishaar. At South High, she has been a member of the Cougar Basketball and Tennis teams, along with Student Council as 9th-11th grade class treasurer and 12th grade student body treasurer. She loves her chemistry class with the best teacher ever, Mrs. Chamberlain, because of all of the fun experiments. Outside of school, she volunteers with the Love, Chloe Foundation, and enjoys baking, shopping, and traveling. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Lainey Howard. Lainey is the daughter of Joni and Scott Howard. At South High, she is a National Honor Society member, HOSA treasurer, and is on the Cougar softball team. Her favorite part of school is being a member of the softball team, as it gives her something to look forward to after a long school day and brings her closer to a fun group of girls. Outside of school, she is a barista and certified trainer at Starbucks, volunteers with Relay for Life, and works with young softball players in town. She also enjoys hanging out with her friends and family, and playing her with dog Millie. After graduation, Lainey plans to attend Neosho Community College to play softball, followed by transferring to a four-year university to achieve a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kailyn Olson. Kailyn is the daughter of Nicole and Shawn Olson. At South High, she has been involved with Cougar volleyball, softball, and Relay for Life. She sees her senior year role on the softball team as a leader whose job it is to teach underclassmen how to make a successful program. She enjoys coming to school every day to see and interact with so many different people. Outside of school, she has worked with organizations feeding families in need and helping during the Christmas season. She also has a shihpoo puppy name Oliver who is her bestie, and credits her family as her biggest supporters. After graduation, Kailyn plans to study pre-nursing at Kansas State University. At South High, she has been a cheerleader for four years and is a member of HOSA and National Honor Society. She has also volunteered for Relay for Life and the Love, Chloe Foundation. She has especially enjoyed her medical internship class, as it has given her a glimpse into her job interests and other future possibilities. Outside of school, Lilyian works at Old Navy and Trinity Lutheran Church, and generally just enjoys spending time with friends and family. After graduation, she plans to attend Kansas State University to major in Nutrition and Health, with the goal of pursuing a career as either a dental hygienist or registered nurse. South High School’s Student of the Week is senior Kylee Carter. Kylee is the daughter of Larry and Cindy Carter. At South High, she participated in volleyball, softball, was a member of Kilt Crew, and National Honor Society. She loved her medical internship class where she was able to shadow general practitioners and receive a glimpse into what she wants to do. She is thankful she will graduate with 24 college credit hours and everything her high school experience has taught her. Outside of school, Kylee has worked as a CNA for Interim Healthcare, and volunteered for Ashby House, Salina Food Bank, the American Cancer Society, and the Salina Area United Way. He enjoys going to school in the pursuit of knowledge and love learning to gain an understanding of new subjects. Outside of school, Evan volunteers at the Salina Public Library, the Food Bank, and Food Drives. In his free time, he enjoys reading and the art of tradeskills, such as carpentry, blacksmithing, and masonry. At South High, she is a thespian, has been a drama club officer for two years, has been a stage crew chief, and has participated in every show both on and off stage. She loves being involved in theatre and drama club, but her favorite subject is math. Yesenia has assisted with Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, the South High Angel Tree, and other drama club community service. She also has two puppies that she loves more than anything else. At South High, she is BPA vice-president, HOSA president, member of FCA, Mathletes, Book Club, Drama Club, Link Crew, and on the Cougars Bowling and Golf teams. Her favorite subject is science and she enjoys the challenge of the innovative lessons of chemistry and physics. She enjoys doing labs in AP Chemistry, is thankful for Mr. Ballenger’s excellent teaching to help her through senior year math. She loves the AP teachers and classes at South High because they are well taught and intellectually challenging. Zach has enjoyed having Mrs. Chamberlain, Mr. Ebert, and Mr. Harris as teachers as their classes made him look forward to coming to school every day.
